DIY Craft Hack: Using a Glue Stick Without a Glue Gun
Have you ever been in the middle of a craft project, reached for your glue gun, and discovered that it was broken, missing, or nowhere near an outlet?
I recently came across a clever DIY craft trick on TikTok that showed another way to use a hot-glue stick when a traditional glue gun isn't available.

How Does the DIY Glue Stick Trick Work?
The idea is to use a regular hot-glue stick along with a small heat source as a temporary alternative when you don't have access to a glue gun.
Instead of placing the glue stick inside an electric glue gun, heat is used to soften the end of the glue stick. Once the adhesive becomes soft enough, it can be applied to a small craft item.
It's definitely one of those "I never thought of that!" crafting tricks!
⚠️ Safety Comes First
Before trying anything like this, remember that a lighter, melted glue, and heated plastic all involve burn and fire risks.
This should only be considered a temporary craft hack for an adult and should be done carefully in a well-ventilated area.
Keep the project away from:
Children and pets
Loose paper
Fabric
Alcohol or other flammable liquids
Other materials that could easily catch fire
You also want to work over a heat-resistant surface.
The goal is to soften the glue—not burn it.
If the glue begins smoking, burning, bubbling excessively, or producing an unusual odor, stop immediately.
Using the Melted Glue
Once a small amount of glue has softened, it can be carefully applied to the craft surface before pressing the pieces together.
Remember that melted hot glue can stick to your skin and cause a painful burn, so never touch or test melted glue with your fingers.
This trick may be useful for something small such as:
Attaching a lightweight embellishment
Finishing a tiny craft project
Making a quick repair
Adding a charm or decoration
Completing the last little part of a project when your glue gun isn't available
Is It a Replacement for a Glue Gun?
Not really.
Think of this as an emergency crafting hack, rather than a replacement for a regular glue gun.
An actual glue gun gives you much better temperature control, glue flow, and handling. It's also much more practical when you're working on larger projects or need more than a tiny amount of adhesive.
If you craft frequently, a mini glue gun, cordless glue gun, or battery-powered glue gun is still going to be the easier choice.
But sometimes crafting is all about figuring out how to finish a project with what you have available—and that's what makes little DIY tricks like this interesting to discover.
💡 Craft Smart Tip
Keep an inexpensive backup mini glue gun tucked away with your craft supplies.
You might completely forget it's there—until the day your regular glue gun decides to quit right in the middle of your project!
And remember: DIY tricks can definitely save a project in a pinch, but when heat is involved, the best craft hack is always one that gets the job done without getting you hurt.
Have you ever tried this trick, or do you have another unusual crafting hack that actually works?
